History of the cart

Changarrito can appear in different ways, it depends on the character that CH gets or needs, for example: CH takes shape of publisher with “Letritas del Changarrito”, as a pretext for making books. The excuse for inviting and hosting artists of other countries at Changarrito Residency. Changarrito Project is a complex and dynamic work, CH is an idea that can appear in different formats, CH is not reduced to a cart. The designed carts are the excuse for moving the Works of the artists, if the cart disappears, breaks, get lost, Changarrito carry on because CH does not depend on the object. Here we present the History of the Cart.

2004 - Model

In September, 2004, Máximo González develops a sketch of cart for Changarrito Project.
Through Escuela de Cultura Popular Mártires del ‘68, Iseo Noyola Isgleas is hired for the interpretation of the design of the first Changarrito cart. This cart is in turn built by Alfredo Meneses. This model is called: 2004 Model.

 2008 - Model

Due to the limitations presented by the previous model regarding weight, mobility and practicality for air transportation, Máximo González designed together with Juan Zuñiga, an appropriate model for traveling, which was built by Jesús Zúñiga Montes de Oca, in March, 2008. This model was called 2008-Model. With Fuse-Box Festival, CH moved to Austin, Texas. Leslie Moody took charge of Changarrito, and continued making projects with Changarrito while she was living there. 

Nowadays, this cart is permanently assigned to Mexic-Arte Museum, Austin, TX, that carry a program of resident artists, with an artist by month, that exhibits its own work at the door of the museum.

 2008 - Plus - Model

Owing to the popularity acquired by Changarrito Project among artists, promoters and fans, and the consequent quantity of invitations to different forums that are received, it is necessary to build additional cart. The third design (July, 2008), also is in charge of Máximo González and Juan Zuñiga, it is produced twice, provoking 2008-Plus-Model, generating this way 4 Changarrito cart in stock, allowing this way its presence in different spaces and the support to geographically distant artists in a simultaneous way.

 Supermarket - Model

Owing to inconvenients with the airline during Miami Art Basel Fair, December 2008, Juan Requena improvises a changarrito from a shopping cart, which is called Supermarket-Model. Other models for Changarrito cart were proposed and probably will be developed very soon. Here below there are some sketches:

Orígenes del Changarrito  En México, la tradición del comercio callejero se remonta a la época prehispánica. History of Changarrito

Changarrito Beginning In Mexico, we can trace street vending back to pre-Colombian times. There is evidence of a great market that functioned near Tlatelolco since the XIV century. Years later Hernán Cortés and Bernal Díaz del Castillo wrote detailed and astounding descriptions of this market. Throughout the city we find smaller markets, although not less important, called tianquitzli by the indigenous. These markets would be the origin of what we know today as “tianguis”; ambulant markets that are set up one or two days a week in different parts of the city. These tianguis are a borderline between formal and informal commerce, considering they are in constant expansion.   What we call “informal commerce” has become a phenomenon of extraordinary dimensions, considering the continuous economic crisis that affects the country and the accelerated decrease in employment generation.
